Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measurement that uses your height and weight to estimate body fat. While it doesn't directly measure body fat, it's a useful screening tool for weight categories.
BMI is calculated by dividing your weight (in kg) by your height squared (in meters). Our calculator does this automatically - just enter your height in cm and weight in kg, then click "Calculate BMI".
A healthy BMI range is between 18.5 and 24.9. Below 18.5 is considered underweight, 25-29.9 is overweight, and 30+ is obese. However, BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic tool.
BMI may not be accurate for athletes with high muscle mass, pregnant women, elderly people, and children. It's best used as a general screening tool. Consult a doctor for personalized health advice.
The BMI formula is: weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). For example, if you weigh 70kg and are 1.75m tall, your BMI would be 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.86, which falls in the normal weight range.
BMI doesn't measure body fat directly, doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution. Two people with the same BMI can have very different body compositions.
BMI for children is calculated the same way, but interpreted differently using percentile charts based on age and gender. This calculator is designed for adults 18+ years.
